        • What is OET?

        OET was designed in the late 1980s by Professor Tim McNamara, under the guidance of NOOSR. The Occupational English Test is an English language test for people interested in the healthcare sector. This examination generally tests the communication skill of healthcare professionals. OET is available in case of 12 professions namely, dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology, and veterinary science. The test has been researched and developed continuously since the time it has been introduced so as to ensure that it has kept up with current theory and practice in language assessment. OET is recognised in many countries such as Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, Ireland, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia, Ukraine and many others as this test gives a proof of a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in the healthcare sector.

        • Syllabus for OET

        Listening Section

        The Listening subtest consists of a total of 42 questions divided into 3 parts. 

        • Part A (Consultation Extracts)
        • Part B (Short Workplace Extracts)
        • Part C (Presentation Extracts)

        Reading Section

        With a total duration of 60 minutes, the Reading section is made up of 42 questions, divided into 3 parts.

        • Part A (Expeditious Reading)
        • Part B (Careful Reading)
        • Part C (Careful Reading)

        Writing Section

        With a total duration of 45 minutes, the Writing section requires the candidate to write a letter, usually a letter of reference in his/her field of specialty. The candidate would be provided with background information to his task which he may or may not incorporate into his reference letter. This particular task is profession-specific.

        Speaking Section

        With a total duration of 20 minutes, candidates are required to individually enact their professional role in real-life scenarios in a professional healthcare environment. A profession-specific exercise, candidates are required to roleplay their profession while the panelist plays a patient for the first part, and the roles are reversed in the latter. Candidates are given 3 minutes to prepare for each side before the start of each act. The roleplays are basically based on mock workplace situations that reflect the mood of the healthcare environment.
