NMAT
1. What is NMAT?
NMAT (NMIMS Management Aptitude Test) is an entrance examination which is conducted by Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai for admissions to its MBA courses.
The NMAT by GMAC exam is computer-delivered and gives each candidate a randomly generated test from a pool of questions, delivered one-at-a-time. NMAT by GMAC can be taken thrice and the best of the scores shall be considered provided the candidate has applied to the institute with each of the scores.Earlier NMAT was conducted by Pearsonvue and considered by NMIMS for offering admission in it’s Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad campus. With effect 2015, NMAT has been conducted by GMAC
The MBA entrance exam conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is known as NMAT by GMAC. The NMAT by GMAC exam scores will be accepted by NMIMS University and 25 other management institutes across India. The two-hour computer-based test is conducted in a 75-day long window commencing from October to December. The total number of retakes allowed in NMAT exam is three including no-shows. NMAT is expected to be conducted at 46 Indian cities in all and 4 international centers.
2. Why NMAT?
- The NMAT by GMAC enables you to take up the test multiple times
- The score allows you to choose the order of the various sections of the exam
- Revision of answers is possible; thereby giving you the opportunity to make amends of your earlier answers
- No negative marking for wrong answers, which allows you to attempt every question if you may please
- Gives you the freedom to choose your dates that are best convenient to you- The 75-day test window opens during the first week of October and will extend through the third week of December. Students can schedule the exam as per the date, time and location that is most convenient to them.
3.How to prepare?
- Clear your basics and establish a stronghold
Quantitative Ability
The four important areas in this section are Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Math. Begin with the basics and ensure conceptual clarity on fundamental properties, formulae and number operations, such as odd and even, prime numbers, LCM and HCF, etc. before graduating to advanced concepts. NMAT is essentially a speed test and thus having a good mental calculation ability has to be given importance. Familiarity with multiplication tables, squares, cubes, common fractions, and their percentage equivalents is desired
- Reasoning
The two important areas in this section are verbal and analytical reasoning. While preparing for this section, remember never to assume or use any information that is not provided in the question. Develop a knack for identifying the questions to be done and the ones to leave. We can’t stress the importance of strong basics for the same.
- Language Skills
The sure shot way of excelling in this section is to develop an extensive reading habit. This helps you improve your vocabulary as well as comprehension
- Take topic tests of varying difficulty levels
Taking tests is an indispensable part of preparing for any competitive exam and things are no different for NMAT. You must develop a habit of test taking and regularly attempt them throughout your preparation phase. Also, make sure you take full-length mock tests every once in a while. Devote the last stage of your preparation, to take full length mocks extensively and spend a good amount of time analyzing those. Based on the analysis, refine your test-taking strategy and test that in the next mock test you take
- Practice Mock Tests
It is not the time to pick up new topics or new study material. Now the focus is required over Mock Tests. Practice as many mock tests as you can, for it will not only let you know your weak spots, but will give you an idea of the ratio of time you are devoting and the time required for each section.
- Get knowledge of your weaker side
It is common among test takers to be weak in one or the other section of the paper. A candidate good in quantitative ability may not be well-versed with language skills. However, non-awareness of your weaker areas can prove to be disastrous while attempting paper. So, make a point of getting to know your weak areas and start working on it. You can do so by going through good question examples and attempting mock tests available over the internet, or solving previous year question papers for better self-analysis.
- Revise the basics
How difficult the paper is, depends upon how well you are prepared for the test. Brushing up on basics is the most important task to be performed in the last few days of exam. Get out all your notes of basics, and revise. It will help a lot.
- Know and use shortcut tricks
NMAT depends upon how fast and accurately you can solve the questions. Familiarity with shortcut tricks is required. Attempting questions using shortcuts will leave you extra time that you can invest in other questions or devote it for section-revision.
Sections like Language Skills, which involves Reading Comprehensions, can be time consuming. Speed plays a major role. Keep practicing RC’s examples for speedy reading.
- Manage your time
You can attempt. NMAT is not a test that examines your ability to solve hard questions- it tests your ability to solve maximum questions in the time allotted. Thus, skimming questions can prove to be of great help.

This section will test the candidates’ proficiency in grammar and comprehension. The questions will be asked from the following topics:

NMAT Syllabus for Quantitative & Numerical Ability

6. Important tips:
- Candidates should get into the habit of regular reading of a newspaper and any magazine which covers the contemporary events well. This will help in building a good vocabulary and also help with the General Knowledge section.
- Brush up the basics of grammar to tackle the error detection questions and sentence correction.
- Identify the words you are not familiar with and try to understand their meaning and usage.
- Listen to speeches or watch movies and/or documentaries with subtitles. This will increase the knowledge of spoken English and might come in use while attempting sentence completion and Para jumble questions.
- Candidates should talk to people in English. They may feel sluggish and shy at first and will make lots of mistakes but soon they will discover that with more talking, their confidence, as well as their accuracy, is increasing.
- Candidates should brush up the basics to get a grip on the fundamental topics.
- Practice is the key to Mathematics, so candidates must practice as many mock tests as possible.
- Spend some seconds over a question and study each question carefully. A brief explanation of why each choice is correct or incorrect should go into candidates’ mind.
- Candidates should never assume or use any information which is not given in the question. Observe only the information given in each question when choosing among the alternative responses.
- Read both the factual passage and the sentence completion instruction carefully. Both must be considered in making your choice.
- Be sure to read all the response choices carefully before eliminating or choosing one of them.
- Candidates can solve most of these questions by following certain tricks and shortcut methods. Therefore, a practice of previous year papers and chapter wise questions is important.
- Candidates should solve questions regularly to get a good grip of it as ample practice should be there.
- Candidates can also prepare for this section by regularly solving crossword puzzles, Sudoku, riddles etc.
