Origin of German Language
The German language and German Deutsch is the official language of both Germany and Austria. It is also one of the languages for Switzerland. German belongs to one of the West Germanic groups of the Indo-European language, which is also combined with English, Frisian and Dutch.
The history of the Germanic language dates back to the Romans in the 1st century BCE. After a few centuries was when the Germanic language was taken a step forward and introduced as a dialect in the 6th Century CE which was known as German. German is a language which carries nouns, pronouns, adjectives as well as verbs. It is the native language to over 90 million people worldwide.
It is one of the most widely spoken foreign languages in the western world. It is also a written language which is used in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. There are two different dialect groups such as the high German and the low German. The difference is between the sound systems, specifically the consonants. High German is used mainly in the southern highlands of Germany and it is also the official written language.
High German
High German is a group of dialects which is the standard literary language. This language was spoken until 1100 in the highlands of southern Germany. Before 1100 the standard language was upper German dialects such as Alemannic and Bavarian. The middle high German was used in intricate literature which was used in the early 13th century.
The modern standard High German was given through the High German dialects which was only spoken in Austria and Switzerland. It was used in higher education, literature as well as mass media. This German dialect was also used by Martin Luther King in the 16th century which was the translation of the bible.
Low German
This dialect was not used in the modern literary standards. It was spoken only in the lowlands of northern Germany. It was first discovered and presented by the old Saxon and the Middle Low German speech which was given by the Hanseatic League. This language has provided the Scandinavian language with loanwords. But as the league decreased the use of Low German also had a decline. Low German is still spoken in homes of the northern part of Germany. However, only a few literature texts produce them.
Other dialects
Alemannic dialects were developed and introduced in the southern parts of the Germanic speech area. The biggest difference was the sound system and grammatical changes that were implied. These dialects are specifically spoken in Switzerland. Western Australia, Swabia and Liechtenstein. It is also introduced in parts of France.
